Behind the project

The originators of the Human Family project are Child Psychiatrist and Psychologist, Dr. Harry Edhouse and Simon Edhouse, of Magnetic Interactive. Simon works in Film production, Advertising and Interactive Media.

The project began with an idea to produce a documentary series and CD Rom on child-rearing and family psychology as an educational aid for parents and the general community. This idea grew to encompassing a broader examination of the history of the evolution of the family to date, its present state and its possible future . This larger context seemed increasingly important to explore, as a deeper analysis of common problems in society leads to the view that human society has in many ways drifted away from elements that were essential to evolution and survival as a species.

The term "phylogenetic-maladjustment" neatly captures the way that modern life has brought about a disjunction between the environment and life style which has been so painstakingly adapted over many millions of years, and the dramatic environment and life-style change which have overtaken us in a few short decades.

Clearly we cannot turn back the hands of time and resume life as hunter-gatherers, but we can strive to identify problems generated by this disjunction, to find the optimum balance, via what we have termed a "naturalistic approach to child rearing"
